At 49 Alpine Street in Cambridge, Olinger Architects reimagined the single-family residence as a flexible, enduring space for modern family life. The home explores the potential of multi-generational living—balancing privacy, adaptability, and shared experience within a single, cohesive design.
Set in Cambridge’s historic neighborhood fabric, the three-level structure is both contextual and contemporary. Open-plan living and dining areas flow toward natural light and garden views, while upper floors house private suites, a family study, and a flexible guest or in-law suite. Anticipating the rhythms of family life, the design incorporates accessible features such as two accessible parking spaces, wider doorways, elevator, and multi-use rooms that can evolve over time.
Built to Passive House–level performance, the home features high-efficiency insulation, triple-glazed windows, and a continuous air barrier system for lasting comfort and energy efficiency. Mechanical ventilation, durable materials, and precise detailing ensure healthy, low-maintenance living across New England’s seasons.
The project was realized through close collaboration among an accomplished team: Chi-Man Associates provided civil engineering, Agile Engineering led structural design, Zade Associates delivered mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and Studio ID shaped the interior architecture. Stella Construction & Home Services brought the design to life with exceptional craftsmanship and care.
The result is a home that’s both refined and resilient—rooted in collaboration, environmental responsibility, and long-term adaptability. 49 Alpine Street stands as a model for contemporary urban living that honors tradition while preparing for the future.
